Oh and if you want critique on this everything is a little too shiny (less specularity on the shirt and shorts, but you already knew that didnt you?)

It's very intimate and personal although my only critique would be the right hand, it seems kind of contorted :P

Great Mood

A few bits of critique would be too concentrate on the composition, for example maybe not put the spaceship in the middle of the render but rather give it room to fly. Also the birds seem kind of out of place considering this place looks desolate and unforgiving. On the flip side great texturing and detail on the mountains and a simplistic design on the ship!

A good start

if the subsurf isn't working you might have to remodel it and make everything into squares and avoid triangles. Also I'm assuming you applied set smooth in the links and materials panel but you should also select your whole mesh and press ctrl + n. This will make sure that all the faces are pointed out; if you don't do this there is a chance that you will get weird rendering artifacts.
